New BlackBerrys Leak Online Ahead of Launch

Rumors about two new Blackberry devices, the Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G, leaked online early Monday just hours before the new devices were believed to debut. Blackberry maker Research in Motion was expected to unveil the new handsets during the company's keynote address at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Florida. It appears, however, the financial Website The Street has beat RIM to the punch with a limited report on new specs for the two new devices.

Despite the leak, the new handsets come as no surprise, since both the Blackberry 9650 and Pearl 3G have been making the rounds on gadget rumor blogs for several months. Then, on Sunday, Al Sacco from CIO.com (a sister publication of PCWorld) released a photo via Twitpcic of a Sprint advertisement from the WES 2010 promo notebook that included the Bold 9650.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Earlier this week I was contacted by Marcus and Albin, two Sonyericsson colleagues working in Lund, Sweden, who have had the good fortune of using the XPERIA X10 for a couple of months. As a summary of some of their experiences they wanted to do a video clip showing how the X10 can be used in daily life.
In the video clip Marcus shows how he uses Timescape as the home screen of the phone and has all social media feeds, texts, music and photos easily accessible at the tip of a finger. Marcus also shows how he is using PlayNow for buying music, Market for downloading apps and games and TrackID for finding out what songs are playing at a café or in a store. The integration with YouTube is also shown from different perspectives.

Motorola Devour

At first glance, Motorola's second Android phone on Verizon, the Devour ($150 with a two-year contract from Verizon; price as of 3/3/10) looks a lot like the Droid. But after spending some time with the new model, I realized that it couldn't be more different from its older sibling. There's a lot to like about the Devour, especially its social networking features, intuitive user interface, and sturdy design, but it also has some shortcomings.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G

The T-Mobile MyTouch 3G is T-Mobile's second smartphone running Google's Android mobile operating system. And while the MyTouch 3G ($200 as of July 22, 2009) has much going for it-- a lightweight design, a gorgeous screen, and the 1.5 update to the Android operating system, it's not without its flaws -- the on-screen keyboard is far from perfect, for example.

The MyTouch 3G is virtually identical to the HTC Magic, as the handset is called overseas. The phone has an eye-catching design that's what the T-Mobile G1 should have been-it's sleek, elegantly curved, and graced with distinctive design touches. When the G1 first came out, I described it as bland. Viewed side-by-side with the myTouch 3G, the G1 now looks downright kludgy. It feels bulky, too, and no wonder: Though the MyTouch 3G's dimensions are only slightly smaller than the G1 (measures 4.5 by 2.2 by 0.5 inches versus the G1's 4.6 by 2.2 by 0.6 inches), in hand it feels significantly smaller, and it is noticeably lighter (weighing 4.1 ounces versus the G1's 5.6 ounces). The Apple iPhone 3G is taller and slightly slimmer than the myTouch

HTC Hero

HTC's third Android OS smartphone, the HTC Hero ($180 with a two-year contract from Sprint; price as of 9/23/2009), is a giant leap forward for the company's family of Android phones, both in hardware and software. It isn't without its flaws, however: Performance can be slow, video playback is unreliable, and the touch keyboard isn't the easiest to use. Even so, the Hero is jam-packed with features, and I appreciated all of its easy customization.

Compared with the European Hero, the Sprint-branded version looks like a completely different phone. Its corners are much more rounded, and it no longer has the trademark HTC chin (also seen on the T-Mobile G1). The hardware buttons are rearranged and now surround the trackball, instead of being placed above it. I'm not really a fan of the chin, so I found that these design tweaks actually improve the ergonomics of the phone.

HTC Droid Eris

The HTC Droid Eris marks the second in Verizon Wireless's parade of the Droids. Also due this week from Verizon, the Droid Eris ($100 with a two-year contract, price as of 11/5/2009) shares the Droid moniker and many features of competing Android phones, but it also adds some touches that improve the experience for business users.

The Droid Eris touchscreen handset (a CDMA version of the HTC Hero) has dimensions similar to, and much of the same functionality as, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G GSM unit, also made by HTC. Side by side, the first thing that jumps out is the Eris's brighter, sharper-looking display. While both handsets have a 3.2-inch, 480-by-320 pixel screen, the Droid Eris supports 262,000 colors while the myTouch 3G has just 65,000 colors.

Samsung Moment

For the hardware alone, Samsung's Moment ($180 with a two-year contract from Sprint) impresses. With a beefy processor, a full QWERTY keyboard, and a vivid AMOLED display, the company's first Android-powered phone in the United States is a strong contender among the rapidly increasing number of Android devices. In terms of software, however, the Moment falls a bit short. Unlike the Motorola Cliq or the HTC Hero, it has no customized overlay to spruce up its somewhat drab user interface. And the touchscreen feels a bit sluggish at times.

Just on looks, the Moment doesn't stand out from the crowd, either. The minimalist handset, with a silver and black color scheme, is a bit on the larger side, measuring 4.6 by 2.3 by 0.6 inches thick. It weighs a hefty 5.7 ounces, which is heavier than most current smartphones, but it is about the same size and weight as the Motorola Cliq, another Android phone with the slide-out keyboard/touchscreen combination.

Samsung Behold II

The Sam sung Behold II ($230 with a two-year T-Mobile contract; price as of 11/12/09) smart phone is the latest device to join T-Mobile's growing army of Android phones, which includes the T-Mobile G1, the T-Mobile my Touch 3G, and the Motorola Liq. Though the Behold II has a gorgeous AMBLED display and a superior camera, customers might be turned off by the high price (it is more expensive than the iPhone 3GS and the Motorola Droid) as well as the somewhat cluttered Touches interface.

While the Behold II is supposed to be an update of the Behold, which debuted last holiday season on T-Mobile, the two phones couldn't be more different. Measuring 4.6 by 2.2 by 0.5 inches and weighing 4.2 ounces, the Behold II is slightly larger than the original (which is 4.1 by 2.2 by 0.5 inches and 3.9 ounces).

Motorola Cliq

The Motorola Cliq ($200 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile) caught my attention because of its sleek design and its innovative MotoBlur overlay for Android. Overall, the new features lived up to my expectations, and I applaud Motorola for doing something different to separate itself from the Android pack. The Cliq isn't perfect, however: Its camera disappoints, and it doesn't ship with the latest version of Android.

Like the T-Mobile G1 and the Samsung Moment, the Motorola Cliq has both a touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard. I haven't spent enough time with the Samsung Moment to compare it and the Cliq in depth, but I can safely say that I much prefer the Cliq to the G1. It feels sturdier, more streamlined, and more comfortable during use.

Measuring 4.5 inches long by 2.3 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick, the Cliq falls somewhere between the G1 and the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (T-Mobile's other Android offering) in size. Weighing 5.7 ounces, it is slightly heavier than other current smartphones--the iPhone 3GS, for example--but it doesn't feel bulky. The Cliq feels as though it has a high build quality, thanks in part to the glass display and metal trim around the handset. I'll take heavier materials over cheap-feeling plastic any day.

HTC Droid Incredible
The best of the Droids on Verizon, the Droid Incredible ($200 with a two-year contract from Verizon) impresses with its speedy user interface, gorgeous AMOLED display and fun Sense user interface. Other than some minor design qualms, this smartphone truly lives up to its name.

Design-wise, the Droid Incredible appears fairly similar to the Nexus One, but it is essentially a CDMA version of the HTC Desire, which launched last February in Barcelona, Spain. The Droid Incredible has an 8-megapixel camera (as opposed to the Nexus One and Desire's 5-megapixel shooters). The Droid Incredible also has a strange rubberdized "topographic" battery cover, which I could have done without. While the Incredible is lighter, it doesn't feel as solid as the Nexus One.

While the Nexus One has four touch keys, the Droid Incredible has four physical hardware keys running along the bottom (Home, Menu, Back, Search). I actually prefer the Nexus One's touch keys, though, as it gives the phone a more streamlined look.

Motorola Droid
The first time you pick up the Motorola Droid ($200 with a two-year contract from Verizon; price as of 10/28/09), you'll notice its solid feel and heft--there's a lot going on behind the crisp, 3.7-inch touchscreen. Making good use of Android 2.0's new features, the Droid is a powerful Web surfing and communications tool that has a chance of living up to its hype. The Droid's biggest flaw, however, is in its hardware design: The keyboard is shallow and flat, which can make typing uncomfortable.

At 0.54 inch thick, the Droid is slightly beefier than the 0.48-inch-thick iPhone 3GS, but it still has room for a 40-key, slide-out QWERTY keypad. At just under 6 ounces, it's about an ounce heftier than the iPhone 3GS. When closed, the 4.56-by-2.36-inch Droid is almost the same size as the 4.5-by-2.4-inch iPhone 3GS.

Motorola is quick to point out that the Droid's 480-by-854-pixel display offers 409,920 pixels, more than double the 153,600 pixels that the 480-by-320-pixel, 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 3GS offers. The Droid's resolution also compares well against that of Android 1.6-based phones such as T-Mobile's myTouch 3G, which has a 3.2-inch, 480-by-320-pixel display.

Google Nexus One
his review has been updated to reflect the February 2, 2010 update of multitouch support.

The coveted "Google phone" is finally here, but the HTC Nexus One ($180 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile, or $530 unlocked; prices as of January 12, 2010) isn't quite the superphone that Google intimated it would be. It lacks some valuable features--like multitouch and Outlook calendar syncing--that we've seen on competing models, and the Android keyboard can be difficult to use. That said, the Nexus One's speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor definitely sets it apart from the Android pack in performance.

Lenovo Introduces ThinkPad X201 Tablet

Lenovo on Tuesday introduced ThinkPad ultraportable laptops, including a tablet, which the company said enterprises prefer over the new breed of keyboardless tablets, which are also called slates.

The ThinkPad X201 Tablet has a 12.1-inch screen and runs on Intel Core i7 processors, the company said. The laptop has a traditional convertible tablet design, with a keyboard, and a touch screen that can be rotated and placed on top of the keyboard to record data.

There is growing momentum behind a new generation of tablets, also called slates by PC makers, which are handheld devices on which users can browse the Internet, play games, read e-books and view video content. Slates usually have software-based on-screen keyboards.

Slates have promise in the consumer segment, but have limited functionality that could restrict their use in enterprises, said Mika Majapuro, senior product marketing manager at Lenovo. While the convertible-tablet market is small, enterprise users need laptops for more than viewing content.

Dell's Impressive Android, Windows Phone 7 Handsets Leaked

It looks like Apple isn't the only one losing control of its smartphones--Engadget reports that a slew of Dell handsets were leaked on Wednesday, including a high-end Windows Phone 7 handset (the "Lightning"), and three Android phones.

Leaked: Dell Lightning Windows Phone 7 Handset

The renders are pretty gorgeous, I have to admit--and the specs aren't too bad either. Both the high-end Windows device and its Android equivalent (the "Thunder") feature 4.1-inch WVGA OLED touch screen displays and, presumably, 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processors, while the other two Android phones are slick and skinny at under 11mm thick.

Take a look at these sexy handsets (details and pictures below) and let us know what you think in the comments!
Dell Lightning

Platform: Windows Phone 7

The Dell Lightning is a candy bar slider that includes a full QWERTY keyboard, 4.1-inch WVGA OLED capacitive touch screen, and 5-megapixel autofocus camera. Internal specs are said to be a 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor, 1GB flash ROM with 512MB RAM plus a MicroSD card slot coupled with an 8GB MicroSD card.

The apparent marketing material Engadget got hold of suggests the Lightning will also have GPS, an acceleromater, a compass, FM radio, and...full Flash video (including video playback). Wow. AT&T and T-Mobile 3G support is listed. According the materials, the Lightning will hit stores in Q4 of this year, with an LTE model to follow by Q4 of 2011.
Dell Thunder

Platform: Android 2.1

Dell's Android answer to the Lightning looks to be the Thunder: a touch screen phone that boasts a 4.1-inch WVGA OLED display, an 8-megapixel camera, and on-device image editing software. The handset is supposedly geared toward "creative explorers" and "affluent professionals" who want to connect seamlessly with their social network without losing any style points.

Engadget suggests that the Thunder houses the same 1GHz QSD8250 processor as does the Lightning, though the spec sheet hasn't been released. The Thunder features Flash 10.1 for web video watching, along with an "integrated Hulu app." While the Thunder will run Android 2.1, it will do so under the custom Dell "Stage" user interface.

According to leaked info, the phone will be sold in AT&T and HSDPA versions in Q4 of this year, with a potential LTE model coming out around the end of 2011.
Dell Flash

Platform: Android 2.x aka Froyo (due after Android 2.1 aka Eclair)

Dell's mainstream Android phone is so sexy, you may not even have to hold out for the Thunder. Dubbed the "Flash," it features an "innovative design with unique curved glass," and is "geared toward creative-types".

The Flash packs an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor, a 3.5-inch WVGA TFT touch screen display, a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, and Flash 10.1. It'll also feature 512MB RAM and up to 64GB of external memory via a MicroSD card. Dell bills the phone as being super-connectable, with support for USB, WiFi (b/g with UPnP/DLNA), AGPS, 3.5mm, and Bluetooth v. 3.0. The phone will be just 11 mm thick and has a target weight of less than 115 grams.

The Flash will be available (hopefully) in the first quarter of 2011, though it's unclear as to whether it will be AT&T branded or unlocked and compatible with AT&T. While it will run Android Froyo, it may also feature the custom Dell "Stage" UI skin.
Dell Smoke

Platform: Android 2.x Froyo

Targeted at corporate consumers, the Dell Smoke is a candy bar style Android Froyo-running smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard and a "price that won't break the bank." The Smoke will feature the same "Stage" UI of the aforementioned Android phones, and sets itself apart from other business phones with an elliptical, slender "non-conforming" style. At 59.8 by 120 by 10.5 mm, the device is described as "perfectly pocketable."

The Smoke features an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor, 512MB/256MB of internal memory with a MicroSD card slot that supports up to 32GB. It also has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, 14.4Mbps HSPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and dual-mic noise canceling.

The Smoke apparently won't appear until Q2 of 2011, but it looks like it will definitely be worth the wait.
Dell Aero

Platform: Android 1.5

Meanwhile, the Dell Aero that we've been hearing about may not be as fast or shiny as the other leaked handsets, but it has a tentative release date of Q2 this year on AT&T. That makes it the first handset we're likely to see, which is only really important if you're impatient.

The Aero is now said to feature a 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen (plus capacitive stylus for handwriting), 5-megapixel autofocus camera, and weighs in at 104 grams at just 11.7 mm thick. It has a somewhat slow (compared to the other leaks) 624MHz Marvell processor, but it comes with some nifty software such as QuickOffice, and support for Microsoft ActiveSync and Exchange.

The Aero also has a WebKit browser, Flashlite, and reportedly some sort of media player that will support music streaming and download ability. Dell does plan on updating the Aero to Android 2.1 sometime between Q3 and Q4 of 2010, though it's unclear as to whether or not this will be an OTA update.

So it seems that Dell has invested heavily in Android (it also has Android iPad rivals in the works), but the sexy "Lightning" suggests it hasn't forgotten about Windows Phone 7, either. Which device interests you the most?

Apple’s Rivals Scramble to Match the iPad

Fusion Garage JooJoo

Available now, the notorious CrunchPad-turned-JooJoo tablet has a big 12.1-inch capacitive multitouch display, runs Ubuntu Linux with a custom interface and supports Flash video. Early reviews have criticized the choppiness of its Flash video playback, and noted that $499 is pricey for a browser-only 4GB tablet (its apps are all Web-based). Key specs include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, nVdia Ion graphics, 1GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Microsoft Courier

Microsoft's Courier--a folding dual-screen digital journal--has the potential to match Apple in user interface innovation...if it ever makes it off the drawing board. Tech blog, Engadget, cites an "extremely trusted source" as saying that the Courier is on track for the second half of 2010. It will reportedly use nVidia's Tegra 2 chip, and the same OS platform as Microsoft's Zune HD and Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1

As a laptop, the IdeaPad U1 runs Windows 7 with a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU4100 chip. But pop the screen off, and the machine instantly becomes a multitouch tablet running its own widget-style Linux interface. And get this: Some tasks, such as open Web pages, automatically continue between both modes. The keyboard base can operate independently, the screen includes 3G, and Lenovo rates the unit's battery life at about 8 hours. It sounds great, but the U1's popularity could hinge on its price and on how responsive its resistive display is to touch. The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 is expected to arrive in early June for around $1000 without carrier subsidies.

Notion Ink Adam

Everything about this device screams innovation. Designed in India, the Adam uses a multitouch-enabled 10.1-inch "transflective" screen from Pixel Qi that switches between sunlight-friendly e-paper and color LCD modes as needed. It also has a 3.2-megapixel, 180-degree-swivel camera; a high-def-video-capable Tegra 2 processor; an HDMI port; 3G; and GPS. It has been previewed running Android 2.1. A cheaper (and thinner) standard screen version will also be available this summer when the Adam launches in June or July for between $327 and $800.

Benchmarks: 15-inch 2.4GHz Core I5 MacBook Pro

Even though the processor speed has actually decreased from 2.53GHz in the previous entry-level 15-inch MacBook Pro to 2.4GHz in this new entry level model, the new system was 23 percent faster in our overall system performance test suite, Speedmark 6. The new 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros use Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 processors rather than the Core 2 Duos previously found throughout the MacBook Pro product line.

These Core i5 and Core i7 processors have a few interesting performance features, including Hyper-Threading, which uses virtual cores to double the amount of processing cores presented to the operating system. These Core i5 and Core i7 processors have dual cores, but OS X treats them as having four cores. Another Core i5/Core i7 technology, Turbo Boost, allows the processor to speed up for a short period of time (when necessary) or shut down unused cores and give the resources to the cores in use. Turbo Boost can increase the clock speed of the 2.4GHz Core i5 processor up to 2.93GHz.

The new entry-level 15-inch MacBook Pro features a 320GB, 5400-rpm hard drive, up from the 250GB, 5400-rpm hard drive found in the model it replaces.

The 2.4GHz Core i5 MacBook Pro was a little more than 10 percent faster than the mid-2009 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro in our Photoshop test suite, 26 percent faster in the Cinebench CPU test, 29 percent faster in Aperture, and 38 percent faster in the MathematicaMark 7 test.

Sony VGN-Z598U/B

Everyone talks about the Apple tax - the premium you're paying for an Apple product. The same could technically be said for some of Sony's more uniquely designed notebooks, like the Sony VAIO VGN-Z598U. This ultraportable class starts at $1,499, but our review unit balloons up to the eye-bulgingly-high price tag of $4,450. If money is no object (yeah, as if that's the case these days), then by all means, scoop up this overstuffed, lightweight beauty.

Primary responsibility for the sticker shock goes to a pair of 128GB solid-state drives, which jacked up the original price by roughly two grand. But our test unit also jams a 2.53-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a dedicated nVidia GeForce 9300M GS GPU into its tiny 12.4- by 1.3- by 8.3-inch frame.

Alienware M11x

f you're a PC gamer sick of lugging around an 8- to 10-pound monster with awful battery life just to play games, Alien ware's M11x is your salvation. This 11.6-inch ultra portable laptop has enough power to play all the latest titles while making only modest compromises, yet it's considerably more portable than typical gaming notebooks in the 15-inch range, let alone giant desktop-replacement notebooks. With prices starting at $799 (as of April 2, 2010; our review system was kitted out to a $1099 configuration), it generally doesn't cost as much as those larger alternatives, either.

The M11x squeezes its fantastic performance into a small package by taking an Intel SUI7300 ultra-low-voltage CPU, which normally runs at 1.3GHz, and overclocking it to 1.73GHz by way of boosting the front side bus from 800MHz to 1066MHz. At least, that's what you find on Alien ware's spec sheets and in the Windows system properties page. Using the CPU-Z tool to examine the CPU properties, we discovered that the clock multiplier was dropped from its default 6.5 to 6.0, making the final clock speed 1.6GHz. If you don't like the overclocked speed, an option in the BIOS lets you tell the CPU to run at the default speed. Alien ware fully supports the overclocked speed in the one-year warranty (optional extended warranties are available).

Apple Now Taking iPad Pre-Orders: Five Things To Consider

Apple began taking pre-orders Friday for the iPad. Just like clockwork, the Apple Store opened at 8:30 a.m. ET and began selling the iPad. Interestingly, Apple limits people to a maximum of two iPads per pre-order (sorry, want-to-be iPad hoarder). As of this writing the iPad pre-order portion of the Apple Store site was not suffering from any crush of traffic.

But before you fork over your credit card number to Apple you may want to consider a few things. Sure, the iPad may be a perfect match for digital life, but then again buying anything sight unseen can lead to a nasty case of buyer's remorse.

Apple iPhone 3GS Reviewed

32GB iPhone 3GS Review, by Melissa J. Perenson, PC World June 23, 2009

It would be easy to dismiss the Apple iPhone 3GS as an inconsequential hardware upgrade. But to do so would underestimate how much, collectively, the phone's new features augment the iPhone experience. With the iPhone 3GS, Apple solidifies its leadership position in a crowded smartphone landscape.

On the outside, the iPhone 3GS ($299 for 32GB, or $199 for 16GB, with a two-year AT&T contract, as of 6/22/09) looks and feels virtually identical to the existing iPhone 3G (now $99 for 8GB with a two-year AT&T contract). Yes, it's disappointing that Apple made no refinements in the external case (see our review of the iPhone 3G for more detail, but it's simply a minimalist design dominated by its display and the home button beneath that display). And yes, it's curious that the colors remain the same, black or white gloss (this from the company which made sure its audio players came in every color of the spectrum).

But inside, the iPhone 3GS has been fully redesigned, with new core components (CPU, memory, integrated compass, video recorder) in different locations, no less. And together with the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade (which makes many compelling features available to existing iPhone customers), the iPhone 3GS stands tall. After pounding on it, I can say that at the full-subsidy prices, the 3GS is a surprisingly worthy upgrade for heavy users of the phone's Web and gaming capabilities, and for general-use apps--even if you're only jumping from the iPhone 3G. Read on to learn why.

Dell's Tablet Plans Leaked

Forget about boring old next-generation iPhone leaks , more rumors are afoot about Dell's aggressive moves into the mobile space with its line-up of Android-based tablet computers . Engadget has uncovered what it claims are leaked documents detailing information about the 5-inch multitouch Dell Streak tablet (also known as the Dell Mini 5 ), and Dell's 7-inch multitouch tablet device, known as the Looking Glass. Engadget's images of marketing material for the Streak 5 reveal the device may be released this summer or possibly as late as September, while the Looking Glass looks set for a November release. There's also no word on pricing for either device.
